SAFe Implementation Roadmap — Implementing SAFe with SPC

What SAFe PI Planning Coach (SPC) Certification Adds to Your Practice

The SPC credential is the practitioner-tier licence to train and coach other Agile Release Trains and value streams. It closes the gap between attending a SAFe course and being authorised to lead large-scale transformations — certifying that you can facilitate PI Planning events, guide Agile Release Train launches, and sustain a continuous-improvement culture at program increment cadence.

Organisations that deploy certified SPCs see measurable differences in transformation velocity. Rather than depending on a single external consultant, they build an internal coaching bench capable of running parallel trains, training new RTEs and Product Managers, and continuously calibrating the operating model to shifting business priorities.

Core Competencies the SPC Credential Validates

  • Business Agility Consulting — applying the SAFe Big Picture across Portfolio, Large Solution, Program, and Team levels to diagnose and remedy systemic bottlenecks
  • Transformation Roadmapping — scoping a phased implementation plan that accounts for organisational readiness, leadership alignment, and value-stream mapping outputs
  • PI Planning Facilitation — designing and running 2-day synchronisation events for trains of 50–125+ practitioners, including pre- and post-PI ceremonies
  • SAFe Course Delivery — authorisation to deliver all role-based SAFe courses (SAFe for Teams, POPM, RTE, LPM, and more) within your organisation or to external clients
  • Metrics and Inspect & Adapt — leading I&A workshops, facilitating problem-solving workshops, and establishing leading and lagging indicators tied to business outcomes
  • Lean-Agile Leadership Coaching — equipping executives, portfolio leaders, and Business Owners with the mindset and behaviours that sustain the transformation

What the Four-Day Course Covers

The Implementing SAFe (SPC) course is structured as an immersive, cohort-based programme. Each day builds on the last, moving from SAFe principles and theory through hands-on launch simulation and coaching practice. Below is a day-by-day outline of the learning arc.

DayThemeKey Topics Covered
Day 1Foundations and the SAFe FrameworkLean-Agile Mindset; SAFe Principles; Core Values; the SAFe Big Picture; Agile Release Trains; Value Stream identification
Day 2Preparing and Launching an ARTReadiness assessments; identifying RTEs and Product Management; Program Kanban; PI Planning logistics; ART launch checklist
Day 3PI Planning SimulationFull PI Planning simulation (team breakouts, draft plan review, risk identification, confidence vote); coaching the Product Owner/Product Manager boundary; Iteration Planning
Day 4Sustaining and ScalingInspect & Adapt workshop facilitation; Lean Portfolio Management introduction; scaling to multiple ARTs; Solution Train overview; SPC coaching responsibilities and ethics

The course is delivered by a Scaled Agile SPCT (SAFe Program Consultant Trainer) — the highest certification tier — ensuring that instruction reflects current framework guidance and real-world transformation patterns from enterprise engagements.

Included Preparation and Post-Course Support

  • Pre-course reading pack: curated SAFe articles, case studies, and the SPC Study Guide
  • Access to the Scaled Agile online community and Partner Portal (upon certification)
  • One-year SAFe Studio subscription included with your certification — on-demand videos, templates, and practice tools
  • Community of Practice cohort: optional ongoing peer-group sessions for newly certified SPCs

Outcomes for Individuals and Organisations

Certification is not the end goal — it is the starting point for sustained delivery improvement. The SPC credential creates compounding value when the certified practitioner is embedded within, or regularly engaged by, the transforming enterprise.

Outcome AreaFor the SPC IndividualFor the Enterprise
AuthorisationLicenced to deliver all SAFe role-based courses internally and externallyReduces dependency on external training spend; builds internal capability bench
Coaching ReachQualified to coach RTEs, Scrum Masters, POs, and PMs across multiple trains simultaneouslyParallel ART launches become feasible; transformation scales without proportional headcount
Strategic InfluenceConversant in LPM, OKRs, and portfolio flow — credible at executive levelAlignment between portfolio strategy and team-level execution improves measurably
Community AccessGlobal SPCT/SPC network, Scaled Agile Partner Portal, and annual SAFe Summit invitationsOrganisation benefits from current-state framework updates and benchmarking data
Career TrajectorySPC is the prerequisite for SPCT candidacy — the trainer-of-trainers tierSuccession planning for transformation leadership becomes achievable

Enterprises that internalise three or more SPCs typically report a material reduction in time-to-PI-Planning-readiness for new trains, a lower rate of ART relaunches caused by role-clarity failure, and higher scores on the Business Agility Assessment across people, process, and technology dimensions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this course designed for?

The Implementing SAFe course is designed for experienced Agile practitioners, enterprise coaches, transformation leads, senior Scrum Masters, Release Train Engineers, and internal change-management professionals who are preparing to lead or sustain a SAFe transformation at program or portfolio scale. It is not an introductory Agile course — participants are expected to arrive with working knowledge of Scrum, Kanban, or an equivalent iterative delivery framework.

What are the prerequisites?

Scaled Agile recommends that candidates have five or more years of experience in software development, IT, or business transformation, including exposure to Agile at the team level. No formal pre-certification is required to attend, though completing the SAFe for Teams or POPM course beforehand materially improves the learning experience.

How does the SPC certification renewal work?

The SPC certification is valid for one year. Renewal requires earning continuing education units through activities such as attending SAFe events, completing SAFe Studio learning paths, contributing to the community, or attending a refresher course. The renewal process is managed through the Scaled Agile Community Portal. Annual renewal keeps your licence to deliver courses current.

Can SPCs deliver SAFe courses to external clients — not just their own organisation?

Yes. Certified SPCs who become Scaled Agile Partners are authorised to deliver public and private SAFe courses to external organisations. The partnership agreement and associated licensing terms govern commercial delivery. Our practice can advise on the partnership pathway as part of post-course coaching support.

Is the course available virtually as well as in person?

Both modalities are offered. Virtual delivery uses collaborative facilitation tooling (digital PI Planning boards, breakout environments) to replicate the simulation fidelity of in-person delivery. Class sizes are kept deliberately small in both formats to maximise coaching interaction and simulation realism.

What differentiates this delivery from self-study or attending another provider?

Instruction is provided by an SPCT — not simply a certified SPC acting as facilitator. The SPCT tier requires demonstrated mastery of transformation delivery across multiple enterprise contexts and is held by fewer than 200 practitioners globally. This means the simulation debriefs, coaching conversations, and transformation roadmapping exercises draw on a substantially deeper reference set than standard SPC-led delivery.
