Certification Paths & Progression Framework

Implementing Safe structures its certification offering around three distinct practitioner tracks, each calibrated to a different scope of accountability within an enterprise transformation programme. Whether your organisation is building internal coaching capacity, scaling an agile release train, or establishing a portfolio governance function, the pathway below maps credential milestones to the responsibilities your people will carry on the ground.

  • Team-Level Track — Foundations of SAFe, Team Practitioner (SP), Scrum Master (SSM). Designed for Agile team members, developers, testers, and business analysts entering a SAFe programme for the first time.
  • Programme-Level Track — Release Train Engineer (RTE), Product Manager/Product Owner (PMPO), Systems Architect. Targets practitioners responsible for coordinating work across multiple Agile teams within a single ART.
  • Enterprise & Portfolio Track — Leading SAFe (SA), Lean Portfolio Management (LPM), SAFe for Architects (ARCH). Intended for senior leaders, portfolio managers, and enterprise architects accountable for strategic alignment and investment governance.
  • Specialist Extensions — SAFe DevOps (SDP), SAFe Agile Software Engineering (ASE), SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager advanced modules. Applicable to technical specialists seeking depth in a single practice domain.

Progression through tracks is non-linear by design. Practitioners may enter at the programme level if prior agile experience warrants it, and dual-track enrolment is available for leaders who hold both delivery and people-management accountability. Our advisors conduct a brief skills-gap assessment during scoping to recommend the most efficient sequence for each cohort.

Credential Comparison: Scope, Audience & Renewal Cycle

The table below provides a concise reference for programme managers, HR business partners, and L&D leads evaluating which credentials to include in a capability-building initiative. All credentials listed are issued by Scaled Agile, Inc. and recognised globally. Continuing Education (CE) hours are required for annual renewal and can be earned through Implementing Safe-delivered workshops, community events, or approved third-party content.

Enterprise Delivery Models

Implementing Safe operates as a Scaled Agile Gold Partner, which means we are authorised to deliver the full SAFe curriculum under a flexible range of commercial and logistical arrangements. Organisations typically choose from three delivery models depending on workforce geography, transformation urgency, and L&D infrastructure maturity.

1. Dedicated On-Site Cohorts

A SPCT- or SPC-certified trainer travels to your location and delivers a full course to a cohort of your employees. This model maximises contextual relevance — case studies, workshop exercises, and ART design artefacts can all be drawn from your actual programme rather than generic examples. Cohort size is capped at 30 to preserve workshop fidelity. Ideal for initial capability builds of 50 or more practitioners where time-to-competence is critical.

2. Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT)

Live, facilitated sessions delivered across distributed teams via video conferencing and collaborative digital tools. VILT cohorts follow the same agenda and include the same exam-preparation support as in-person equivalents. Sessions are typically split across two to three days with asynchronous pre-work to keep synchronous time focused on application and discussion. This model suits organisations with employees across multiple time zones or where travel budgets are constrained.

3. Train-the-Trainer (SPCx) Programme

For organisations investing in a long-term internal coaching capability, we support the development of internal SAFe Practice Consultants (SPCs) who can then deliver accredited training to your workforce independently. This typically involves sponsoring high-potential internal coaches through the SPC certification journey, followed by a supervised co-delivery period with an Implementing Safe SPCT. Organisations with large, recurring training volumes often find this the most sustainable model at scale.

What to Expect on Your First Call

We treat the initial scoping conversation as a working session, not a sales call. Before we discuss any training engagement, our practice advisors need to understand the organisational context well enough to give you an honest recommendation — including recommending against a certification programme if a different intervention would serve you better.

A typical first call runs 45 to 60 minutes and covers the following areas. We ask that you bring at least one stakeholder with visibility of your current transformation programme structure and one with L&D or HR accountability, where possible.

  • Transformation context — What business problem or strategic goal is driving the SAFe adoption? Are you at PI 1 or PI 14? Is the ART fully launched, or are you still in a readiness assessment phase?
  • Current skill baseline — What certifications does your workforce already hold? Are there pockets of certified practitioners working without organisational support structures?
  • Cohort scope and timeline — How many people need to be trained, across which roles, and within what timeframe? Are there programme events (PI Planning, SAFe Summit, audit milestones) that create hard deadlines?
  • Geography and delivery constraints — Where are your people located? Are there security, data residency, or procurement constraints that affect delivery mode or vendor requirements?
  • Success definition — How will your organisation measure the impact of this investment? Are pass rates, internal coaching capacity, or business outcome metrics the primary indicator?

Following the call, we produce a written scoping summary and a recommended programme outline within five business days. There is no obligation attached to receiving this document — it is intended to give you a concrete basis for internal decision-making and budget approval conversations.
